Irene in 1960
Irene was a student at the College El until the end of the fifth grade; we fondly remember her warmth and her wonderful artistic talent. I particularly recall the cover she made for a PTA Christmas cookie recipe book in, I believe, fourth grade. She moved from Mt. Pleasant when her family relocated to San Jose, California, in the summer of 1957; her father, Dana R. Sudborough,
had been professor of mathematics at Central, moved to the faculty of San Jose State University (1957-1964), continued as a professor at SOU until his retirement in 1980, and died in 1997.
The following information about Irene comes from one of
her older brothers, Hal:
"Irene died in the summer of 1974 after a long period
of anguish and struggle, which included stays in several State Hospitals
for a condition diagnosed as schizophrenia. We miss her. I
have pictures she painted on my living room walls and several other memorabilia.
She was indeed a very talented artist." He also provides this
vignette: "I think Irene and Francie [Cuthbert] were pretty good
friends. And, my mother sent me over to their house when Francie
had mumps, as I had never had them and she was worried that I'd get them
much later in life. We also went berry picking with the Cuthberts
as I recall, who were bird fanciers"
(Hal sent the pictures of Irene; Dr. Sudborough's picture is from the
1949 Chippewa)
